How can diplomatic actors deal with polarisation, particularly when it is deliberately used to entrench political deadlock? The CoDe Lab is organised by the Impact Hub at the Institute for Conflict Management and combines Bart Brandsma’s approach to polarisation with insights from diplomatic practice and a case exercise on the EU-led Belgrade–Pristina Dialogue mediation initiative.

The multi-award-winning author Anne Rabe is visiting the Viadrina. Together with legal historian Prof. Dr Benjamin Lahusen, Anne Rabe will discuss political experiences, democratic culture and social change in East Germany in a talk entitled ‘Democracy is being saved in the East’.

This workshop, bringing together media professionals, researchers and prospective students, focuses on the media dialogue about and with authoritarian attitudes: What dilemmas do local journalism and social media face when reporting on authoritarian and far-right attitudes? Particularly when they are addressing both people who share these attitudes and those who do not? How do they manage to overcome these dilemmas, and what strategies can be derived from this and potentially developed further in a targeted manner? For which other stakeholders might these strategies also be valuable?

Dr Anne Holper’s workshop focused on the question of how Germany can and should use the current developments in the Russia-Ukraine war to campaign for an end to the conflict. The aim was to initiate an open-ended, collective discussion on this issue and to gather participants’ views and suggestions on how Germany could help bring Russia’s war against Ukraine to an end. Following a brief introduction to the current situation, the participants discussed various approaches and ideas, weighed up obstacles and risks, and considered how these might be overcome in practical terms.
